Ramos: Buffon won’t be criticised for his mistake but I will

Spain defender Sergio Ramos has claimed that it is unfair that he will be heavily criticised for his error against Italy, while Gianluigi Buffon won’t be condemned in his homeland.

Ramos and Buffon are seen as two of the standout stars in world football, but they both made high-profile mistakes in last night’s 1-1 draw between Spain and Italy in a World Cup qualifier.

Italy goalkeeper Buffon, in a rare error of judgement, rushed off his line and missed the ball, enabling Vitolo to open the scoring for Spain. However, Ramos conceded a penalty in the second half, with Daniele De Rossi converting from the spot to equalise.

As reported by Marca, Ramos said: “Those criticising me right now should enjoy themselves, because I’m going to shut them up in the end. Anyone can make a mistake, even Gianluigi Buffon.

“The only difference is that in Italy they applaud you while here [in Spain] they boo you.”

Ramos is an excellent defender but he has a reputation for making reckless challenges and has conceded four penalties already this season.

At his best, though, the Real Madrid star is capable of stopping opponents in their tracks with precise interceptions, while he is also composed on the ball, as demonstrated by the fact that he has an average pass accuracy of 91% in La Liga this season.
