REPORT: Barcelona still have not offered Messi a new contract

Lionel Messi is yet to be offered fresh terms regarding a new contract despite opening talks mid-way through January, reports The Sun.

Following the Catalan giants’ 5-0 win over Las Palmas in La Liga on January 14th, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed Barca had opened talks with the Argentina international.

The president was keen to reassure fans that the club were relaxed regarding the talisman’s future – despite the director being sacked for launching surprise attack at Messi.

And according to Marca, Barca are not even close to handing the forward an offer.

Bartomeu has contacted Messi’s representatives via phone calls but nothing more than that.

And talks are supposedly non existent – as negotiations haven’t taken place and no figures have been mentioned.

Speaking to Esport3 after their victory against Las Palmas, Bartomeu said: “There aren’t any nerves. I want to reassure everyone, I will personally take care of the negotiations with Leo and his family.

“Everything requires time. We want Messi to remain here, but I will not give out any details.

“We are talking with his people. He is the best in the world, he wants to stay here and we want him to as well.

“Everything will be done with discretion and calmness. Of course it is an essential renewal for the club.

“I have already said the sooner the better – nothing has changed.”
