Sir Alex Ferguson has privately admitted that he was wrong about Jose Mourinho and believes Manchester United have finally found the right man capable of succeeding him at Old Trafford.
Mourinho, 54, was overlooked as Ferguson’s successor in 2013 in favour of then-Everton boss David Moyes, who spent ten months at the Theatre of Dreams before being sacked.
The self-proclaimed Special One rejoined Chelsea that summer and had to wait three years until Louis van Gaal’s reign was ended during his second season at the club.
Ferguson, and indeed the club, had reservations over Mourinho’s confrontational approach and Sir Bobby Charlton had questioned the Portuguese’s suitability for Old Trafford during Ferguson’s final campaign.
However, according to the Daily Mail, Ferguson has told some of his former colleagues that he wishes now that Mourinho had replaced him at the Theatre of Dreams and says the club have the right man in place.
Despite a poor start to the season, Mourinho has recovered and his United side are now plaing a good brand of football that is also producing results.
Mourinho claimed his first piece of silverware at the club after Sunday’s 3-2 EFL Cup final win against Southampton.
The victory means he’s now level with Ferguson on four League Cup title wins.
The Red Devils are through to the last-16 of the Europa League and the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, though they remain in sixth in the Premier League
