Ronaldo on the brink of another Champions League history

Cristiano Ronaldo has a date with destiny in Milan on May 28 as he seeks his third Champions League title and to add to his tally of two goals in the final.

No player has managed to reach three goals in the final of the Champions League era, with Samuel Eto’o, Raul Gonzalez and Lionel Messi accumulating two each.

Only Alfredo Di Stefano, scorer in five consecutive finals between 1956 and 1960, can better that record during the previous European Cup format.

Ronaldo scored for Manchester United in the 2008 final in Moscow, helping the Red Devils secure a third European title, adding his second final goal in Lisbon as Los Blancos beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 to land La Decima in 2014.

His only loss in the final came after he had failed to score, as Barcelona beat United 2-0 in Rome in 2009.On Saturday, the 31-year-old will compete for not only Champions League honours and records but to also establish himself as a firm favourite for the Ballon d’Or.

The competition’s top goalscorer this season with 16 goals plans to return to training on Tuesday after recovering from a slight muscle problem, as preparations for the trip to Milan reach their climax.
