Ronaldo on course for European Golden Shoe after overtaking Suarez

Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Wolfsburg has allowed him to edge past Luis Suarez in the race to end the season as the ‘Pichichi’ top goalscorer in Europe.

The Real Madrid forward has amassed 46 goals this season, with 30 goals in the Primera Division and 16 goals in the Champions League.

Luis Suarez had been leading the way, owing to a combination of his sensational form this season and the fact that he has played in six competitions this season to the two that Ronaldo has featured in.

Suarez has 45 goals to his name this season and the battle between him and Ronaldo looks set to continue until the bitter end of the campaign.

Football fans are used to Lionel Messi and Ronaldo battling out to finish the season as the top goalscorer, but the Argentinian has been way off of the blistering pace set by Ronaldo this season.

Messi has just six goals in the Champions League and 22 in La Liga.

Ronaldo has now scored 30 league goals or more for six consecutive seasons at Real Madrid whilst Messi will have to net eight between now and the end of the season if he hopes to take his own league tally to 30.

Despite coming in for criticism during this campaign, Ronaldo remains on track to end the season as the league’s top goalscorer, the Champions League top goalscorer and the European top goalscorer.
