Ronaldo: It’s “understandable” that Barcelona players snubbed 2016 FIFA awards

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has aimed a dig at Barcelona after the Catalan giants decided against attending today’s FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award ceremony in Zurich.

Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi were all expected to attend the ceremony having been named in the FIFpro World XI but the Barcelona players decided against going to Zurich as they play Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey on Thursday evening.

When asked about the no-show from Barcelona, Ronaldo said, as reported by Goal, after being named FIFA’s Player of 2016: “I don’t really have anything to add, awards speak for themselves. I’m really, really happy.

“I’m sorry that some people from Barcelona aren’t here with us and that’s understandable but thank you to everyone. Thank you for what you’ve given me.”

Ronaldo has certainly had an excellent 2016 as he helped Real Madrid to win the Champions League while just a couple of months later, he captained Portugal to glory at the European Championships in France.

Furthermore, in the last six weeks, Ronaldo has also won two major personal awards in the aforementioned FIFA Player of 2016 and the Ballon d’Or.

Portugal’s no.7 looks set to add another La Liga title to his trophy collection too with Real Madrid five points clear of Barcelona, with a game in hand over their arch rivals.
