Rooney equals Nistelrooy’s European goals record in Fenerbahce loss

Wayne Rooney has levelled with Rudd Van Nistelrooy on 38 European goals following his sublime effort in Manchester United’s 2-1 loss against Fenerbahce.

The 25-yard effort in the dying minutes of the match was not enough to spare the English giants from defeat, though it will serve as a personal highlight for the 31-year-old.

Having been relegated to the bench in recent weeks, the goal will do the Englishman’s confidence a world of good as he looks to feature in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI on a more prominent basis.

Now with 247 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils, Rooney is just two away from equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s record with the club.

The result sees the Red Devils slip to third in Group A on six points, with both Fenerbahce and Feyenoord a point ahead.

Mourinho’s side faces Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday as they look to grab their first Premier League victory since September, where they beat Leicester City 4-1 at Old Trafford. Paul Pogba is unavailable after picking up a knee injury in last night’s defeat.
