Schmeichel: Ibrahimovic was born for Manchester United

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has given his backing to the possibility of Zlatan Ibrahimovic joining the club this summer.

The Swedish striker is out of contract next month after revealing last week that he will leave Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

That has sparked rumours linking him with a move to a number of top European clubs. The Red Devils have been repeatedly mentioned recently and Schmeichel feels the 34-year-old would be a brilliant signing for his former club.

I read about Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the newspapers, the Dane told Sky Sports.“I would love for him to come to Manchester United, I’ve said this for a long time. He was born to play for Manchester United.

“He’s like an Eric Cantona, who can inspire all the guys in the dressing room but also the supporters.

“That’s what it’s all about. It’s not about having a Sunday nap at Old Trafford.”

With United lacking an out-and-out goalscorer this season, a move for Ibrahimovic would go a long way to correcting that problem.

He lead PSG to the league title once again by netting 38 goals and registering 13 assists in 31 appearances. In addition goals in both legs of the first knock-out ties against Chelsea saw the club reach the Champions League quarter-final yet again.

His potential arrival could be seen as a major sign that Jose Mourinho will replace Louis Van Gaal as manager next season, which could have severe repercussions for a number of the club’s youngsters including Marcus Rashford.

Under the Dutchman, many academy players have been given an opportunity in the senior team and this is something Mourinho has rarely done wherever he has gone.
