Scholes: Martial should be United’s second or third choice striker

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has said that he doesn’t think that Anthony Martial should be the team’s first-choice striker as he is still just 20 years old.

Martial, who earns £90,000-a-week, joined United from Monaco over the summer in one of the biggest, and most surprising, deals of the season and no-one was expecting so much from the youngster so soon.

However, he has adapted well to life in the Premier League and so far this term he has scored seven goals, a total that no United player can better.

Martial’s form has dropped off in recent weeks, which is to be expected given how much he has taken on at such a young age, and Scholes has told the Daily Mail that the youngster shouldn’t be the first-choice.

“Martial is a young player who will become a top centre-forward, but, as a 20-year-old, he is a second or third choice.”

Scholes has a point, it’s ridiculous that Martial has had to so much at a young age and it’s worth remembering that over the past couple of seasons, the Red Devils have let the likes of Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez all leave.

Meanwhile, Man United’s next game sees them host West Ham United in the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday.
