Sevilla becomes the first team in 40 years to win three consecutive major European finals

Sevilla are the first club in 40 years to win three European finals in a row following their 3-1 win victory over Liverpool in the Europa League final.

They beat Benfica 4-2 on penalties in the 2014 final and then last year they defended the trophy by beating Dnipro 3-2.

This season they beat Molde, Basel, Athletic Bilbao and Shakhtar Donetsk to set-up the final against Liverpool.

Daniel Sturridge gave the Reds the lead but Sevilla responded 17 seconds into the second-half through Kevin Gameiro before Coke scored twice to seal the victory.

It means Sevilla match Bayern Munich’s achievements between 1974-76 when they won three European Cups in a row.

They become only the fourth side to do it along with Bayern, Real Madrid and Ajax.

Unai Emery has been in charge for all three of those victories and whatever he said to his team at half-time of this game evidently worked.

Sevilla, who didn’t win a single game away from home across the entire season in the league, will now play in the Champions League next season.

They will enter at the group stages, as they did last year when they were knocked out in the group stages and dropped into the Europa League.

As for Liverpool they will not be playing European football at all having finished eighth in the Premier League.
