Sevilla go entire La Liga season without winning away from home

Sevilla‘s failure to beat Athletic Bilbao on Saturday means that Unai Emery’s side have gone the full season without winning away from home in La Liga.

Los Rojiblancos headed into Saturday night’s campaign-closing fixture at San Mames Stadium with little to play for as both Bilbao – their opponents on the night – and Real Sociedad were out of reach both above and below in the table.

They ended 2015/16 in seventh place – down two places and a whopping 24 points from 2014/15 – and their struggle to emulate last year’s success boils down to an abysmal record on the road.

Sevilla are the only team across Europe’s top five leagues this season to fail to win a single match away from home, eclipsing the records of the likes of Aston Villa, Troyes and Levante.

It’s an amazing stat considering they lost only four league matches in a 24-game spell between September and March and boast the fourth-best home record in Spain having fallen to defeat in front of their own fans only four times.

Despite ending their La Liga endeavours with a whimper, Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Bilbao doesn’t bode well for Sevilla’s two remaining games of the season.

They lock horns with Liverpool in Switzerland in the final of the Europa League before doing battle with Barcelona four days later at the home of Atletico Madrid, with Emery’s charges needing to improve their away form to have any hope of lifting silverware in the coming weeks.
