Shearer: Why Arsenal may NEVER win the Premier League

Alan Shearer has written off Arsenal’s chances of regaining the Barclays Premier League title until they buy a world class striker.

The former Newcastle and England captain, speaking in his role as a pundit for Match of the Day’s coverage of the Gunners’ 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday, was frank in his assessment.

He said: ‘They won’t win the league until they sign a top class, world-class striker, who can get 25 or 30 goals a season.’

Arsenal have not won a top-flight crown since the 2003-04 campaign which saw them go all 38 league games unbeaten.

Shearer, who is the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer, believes that the north London club are lacking some star quality in their squad.

The three-time Golden Boot winner added: ‘I’ve been saying all season that they’re at least two players, top players short, and my view hasn’t changed on that.’

Arsenal should have won comfortably against Palace and leapfrogged Manchester City in the table, but were instead made to settle for a point.

Arsene Wenger’s side missed a number of clear-cut opportunities to score and had more than 70 per cent of the possession at the Emirates Stadium.

Yannick Bolasie struck late for Crystal Palace to secure a draw after Alexis Sanchez had given the hosts the lead with a looping header.
