STAT: Arsenal score their first goals from outside the area in 2016 against West Brom

The two goals that Alexis Sanchez scored in Arsenal‘s 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion this evening were the first that they’ve scored from outside the area in the Premier League in 2016.

Sanchez opened the scoring with a fine turn past Sandro, and then a low shot into the bottom corner that easily beat Ben Foster. His second came when Mesut Ozil feigned a free-kick and Sanchez stole in to put it into the far corner, catching Foster by surprise.

Those two goals double Arsenal’s tally for the season from outside the area to four, and they’re the first the Gunners have managed in 2016.

Only league leaders Leicester City, Watford and West Brom have scored fewer goals from outside the area this season, a perfect example of the team’s preference to work the ball into the box.

The result lifts Arsenal into third, two points ahead of Manchester City who they still have to play at the Etihad before the end of the season.

With little to play for now, Arsenal have to focus on ending the campaign well and putting them in a good position going into next season, where they’ll have to challenge for the league title.
