Sunderland sack Adam Johnson after guilty plea to child sex charge

Adam Johnson has been sacked by Sunderland after the midfielder pleaded guilty to child sex offences this week.

The former England international appeared at Bradford Crown Court on Wednesday morning following allegations of sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16, after first being arrested by Durham Police in March of last year.

He was charged on 27th April but continued to represent the Black Cats whilst awaiting his trial, which Johnson subsequently pleaded guilty at earlier this week.

And after admitting one count of grooming and one of sexual activity with a 15-year-old schoolgirl, the winger has now been sacked by Sunderland with immediate effect, with his contract at the Stadium of Light terminated on Thursday evening.

The news comes just hours after Adidas terminated their own boot sponsorship with the 28-year-old, who could now face time in prison with guidelines on sentencing for the count of grooming carrying a maximum punishment of two years and six months behind bars.

Sunderland released the following statement on their official website: “In light of Adam Johnson’s guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect.

“The club will make no further comment.”

Johnson, who was earlier today omitted from Sunderland’s squad for their Premier League fixture with Manchester United this weekend.
