“I swore to protect you” – Buffon pens open letter…to the goal post he defends

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has posted a poetic open letter on social media in tribute to the goal which he has defended for so many years.

The 38-year-old has been long considered one of the world’s best shot- stoppers and over the weekend the Italian set a new record in Serie A, for the longest run without conceding a goal in the division.

Buffon past the record set by Sebastiano Rossi in the third minute of the contest against Torino and marked his own landmark at the 974th minute, when a penalty was netted by Andrea Belotti in the 4-1 win for the Old Lady.

And the experienced goalkeeper has celebrated his sensational effort by posting an open letter to his Twitter account, in tribute to the goal he has stood in front of since he was a teenager.

In the note Buffon talks about protecting the goal, letting it down and putting the net ahead of his own well-being. It is a poetic and slightly uncanny tribute to the thing that he has stood in front of throughout his entire career.

Journalist James Horncastle has offered a translation via his own Twitter account and it shows how creative and loving Buffon is of the role he plays in the team.
