Szczesny: I didn’t improve in any way at Arsenal

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny claims his game didn’t improve in any way after Arsene Wenger made him Gunners number one.

The Poland international, who spent two seasons on loan at Roma from 2015 to 2017 before completing a permanent move to Juventus ahead of the new season, added that he has since “improved massively” while playing in Italy.

Szczesny saw his first team opportunities reduced in north London when the Gunners signed former Chelsea shot-stopper Petr Cech.

But he impressed during his loan spell in Rome and secured a permanent move to Serie A when the champions of the competition came calling in July.

Speaking about his time at Arsenal, Szczesny told The Independent: “I enjoyed working with some great coaches at Arsenal, Roma and here, but the goalkeeping school in Italy is very different.

“It’s very technical and pays more attention to the details.

“It’s really made a difference for me because I started playing at a very young age with Arsenal and as you play you gain experience and that’s how you grow.

“But, honestly, I couldn’t say from a technical standpoint that I improved in any way from when I became first-choice at Arsenal until the day I left for Roma.”

Szczesny claims that in complete contrast to this, he has seen dramatic improvements in his game since playing in Serie A.

He told the paper that the coaches in Italy work on all aspects of your game every single day, as opposed immediately following a performance.
