Torres congratulates Griezmann for Euro 2016 Golden Boot win

Fernando Torres has congratulated his Atlético Madrid teammate Antoine Griezmann after he won the Euro 2016 Golden Boot.

Griezmann finished as the leading scorer with six goals across seven appearances in France this summer. However the Frenchman couldn’t inspire his nation to a third European crown; instead he’d watch Portugal lift their first major international honour after winning the final 1-0 after extra- time, with Eder grabbing the goal.

Nevertheless Torres – winner of the prize at Euro 2012 – was proud of Griezmann’s exploits, posting the following message on Instagram:

His six goals leave him three behind Cristiano Ronaldo and compatriot Michel Platini in the all-time European Championship scorers list.

Despite the disappointment, Griezmann’s performances have enhanced a growing reputation. Across a total of 54 appearances for Atletico last season, he scored 32 goals, enjoying his best campaign yet. Only the last two Ballon d’Or recipients – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – have outscored him in La Liga over the last two seasons.

This newfound status unsurprisingly caught the attention of many clubs across Europe, including links with a move to the Premier League.

Atletico reacted by offering the 25-year-old forward a new contract last month, which he duly signed, keeping him at the Vicente Calderon until 2021.
