Vidal blasts ‘ugly’ Atletico Madrid after Champions League defeat

Arturo Vidal was unable to hide his disappointment at Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final defeat by what he called an ‘ugly’ Atletico Madrid.

Pep Guardiola’s side had 72 per cent possession and 33 shots during their 2-1 second leg win, which was not enough to overturn a 1-0 first-leg defeat and saw the Spanish outfit through by virtue of Antoine Griezmann’s away goal.

That meant a hat-trick of successive semi-final defeats for Guardiola and the German giants, and Vidal could not resist flinging a string of insults in the direction of Bayern’s conquerors.

First he branded Atletico ‘ugly’.

Then he insisted Diego Simeone’s team were unable to get the ball from Bayern, who he claimed were still the best team in the world.

After that he bizarrely claimed Atletico would be ‘dreaming’ of Bayern for weeks to come.

And finally he claimed the winners did not deserve their place in the final.

‘Today ugly football – Atletico – played against the best football in the world. The only time they saw the ball was for the goal,’ he moaned.

‘They are going to be dreaming about us right up to the final. They did not have the ball, they took on the best team in the world, they took their chances and got to the final.

‘The best does not always win in football, like today. They are not deserved finalists.’

Vidal, the all-action Chile midfielder who joined Bayern from Juventus last summer, added: ‘We were superior. We controlled the game, but we did not finish off the chances we had.

‘Atletico did exactly what they have been doing all year in their league and took advantage of their chances.’

Atletico will face the winner of Wednesday night’s other semi-final between Real Madrid and Manchester City in the final in Milan on May 28. Atletico’s local rivals could only manage a goalless draw in Manchester in the first leg.
