Wenger: Arsenal were “let down” by referee against Bayern

Arsenal manage Arsene Wenger was adamant that last night’s 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich was not his most disappointing night in Europe.

The Gunners suffered the biggest two-leg defeat in English history as the German giants repeated their first leg hammering by coming from behind at the Emirates to destroy Wenger’s side.

Theo Walcott did give Arsenal the lead after 20 minutes, but it all started to go wrong when Laurent Koscielny was sent off and Robert Lewandowski converted his penalty following the incident.

Arturo Vidal then grabbed two goals, with Douglas Costa and Arjen Robben grabbing one each as Bayern ripped the Gunners apart, but Wenger has insisted that it wasn’t his worst night in Europe.

“I don’t think so because we knew before the game it was difficult to qualify after the first game but wanted at least, as a minimum, to go home and feel that we had dealt with the situation with pride and commitment, and we did,” Wenger said in his post-match press conference.

“The fact that the end result will not highlight the quality of our performance was very disappointing.”

The Frenchman also didn’t blame his players for the heavy defeat, as Wenger felt it was the referee who let them down.

“No. I think the referee has let us down,” he added.

Arsenal have now been knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 for the past eight seasons, and it prompted strong protests against Wenger post-match.

They have now lost five of their last seven games in all competitions.

Due to their incredible 10-2 defeat to Bayern Munich over two legs, Arsenal were left with one of the worst defensive records in the Champions League this season.
