Wenger: Sanchez took advantage of Giroud situation and clicked quickly

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Alexis Sanchez took his chance to shine as a central striker when it came earlier this season.

Sanchez is currently first choice for Arsenal in the central striker’s role after scoring 11 goals in the Premier League to challenge Diego Costa for the Golden Boot award.

He has been in excellent form for the Gunners so far this season and is keeping Olivier Giroud out of the team with his performance in attack.

Sanchez played through the middle at the start of the season as Giroud struggled with a lack of fitness and some niggles, and Wenger thinks he took his chance perfectly.

“Sometimes when you have too many players you cannot attempt something which isn’t immediately conclusive because you’re under pressure,” Wenger said to the club’s official website.

“If it doesn’t work in one or two games and you have a top player on the bench, you’re tempted to change it very early.

“However, this year it clicked very early in the season because he took advantage of the fact Olivier Giroud was not here and not ready, so I was able to give him a run of games and he’s accepted that role very well.”

Sanchez had previously occupied the last winger’s role at Arsenal and only filled in centrally from time to time.

However, he has taken to the role exceptionally this season and is leading Arsenal into a title race thanks to his stunning form in front of goal.
