Xavi: ‘Spectacular’ Ronaldo unlucky to play in the age of Messi

By Isoccer Staff

Barcelona legend Xavi believes ‘spectacular’ Cristiano Ronaldo would receive infinitely more appreciation if he didn’t play in the age of Lionel Messi.

The Real Madrid star is constantly compared with his Barcelona rival and the pair push one another to ever greater heights with spectacular goals and skill.

But, perhaps unsurprisingly, Xavi believes his former Nou Camp team-mate Messi is not only the better of the two, but the greatest of all-time.

He told A Bola TV: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo is a born scorer, a spectacular footballer.

‘The problem is that there is Messi, who for me is the best player in history.

‘That is the only problem that Cristiano Ronaldo has, but he is a player who scores and continues to mark an era.’

Ronaldo can arguably claim the upper hand at the moment, however, as his Real side prepare to take on city rivals Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals this week.

Messi’s Barcelona crashed out to Juventus in the last round, but the two sides remain locked together in an intense battle for La Liga.

Barca are ahead on head-to-head record, but Real crucially retain a game in hand.
