Xhaka: Beating Man United was the best moment of my career so far

Granit Xhaka has revealed his career highlight was a victory over Manchester United when a Basel player, a feat Arsenal fans will be keen for him to repeat next season.

Xhaka arrived at Arsenal last month after the Gunners paid Borussia Monchengladbach £34million for the Swiss international, who could be united with another former Basel player, Mohamed Elneny, in Arsene Wenger’s midfield next season.

At Gladbach Xhaka was named club captain and helped the Bundesliga side to claim a European berth but the greatest moment in his career came before his move to Germany, when his boyhood team knocked Sir Alex Ferguson’s side out in the group stages of the 2011/12 Champions League.

“I think [the best moment of my career] was a game against Manchester United for Basel,” he told the club website. “We played in Manchester and drew 3-3, then we played at home and won 2-1 to knock them out and progress to the next round.

“It was big. Basel were a smaller club than Manchester United and to beat them 2-1 was a very nice moment.”

Arsenal and Xhaka will return to Old Trafford on November 19 whilst their home game with Jose Mourinho’s new side forms part of a tough end to the 2016/17 season. It is currently scheduled as their third to last game on the weekend of May 5-9.
