Yaya Toure: I thought it was Man United that wanted to sign me

Yaya Toure admits he thought it was Manchester United who wanted to sign him from Barcelona – and his agent had to tell him it was the team that play in blue who actually approached him.

The midfielder signed for Manchester City for £24million in 2010 and insists he has no regrets, despite initially thinking he could be heading for Old Trafford instead.

The Ivorian powerhouse is widely expected to leave the Etihad in the summer, with incoming boss Pep Guardiola preparing a massive overhaul of his squad.

But he claims he was surprised it was City not United that showed the most interest in him at the time.

“To be in this squad that is making history, it’s unbelievable,” Toure said.

“When I was at Barcelona and initially approached by Manchester City I thought it was Manchester United that wanted me.

“My agent had to tell me it was the team in the blue shirts.

“At the time Manchester United were putting Manchester City in the shadows. It was unbelievable. Manchester United is a big club and I respect that club a lot.

“It was a big challenge but I came because I knew they were going to succeed and we would win trophies, compete with the big clubs and with Manchester United.

“This was the king of club I wanted to have a story with and make history with. I made a good choice.”
