Supporters of Lionel Messi have called for a huge demonstration of support in an effort to persuade the Argentina superstar to continue playing for the national team.
Messi emotionally called time on his international career on Sunday evening after he missed a penalty in the Copa America final against Chile, leading to his opponents lifting the trophy once again.
It marks the third consecutive campaign that Messi and Argentina have fallen at the last hurdle of a major competition, having been beaten by Chile in the Copa America last season as well, and a loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.
The 29-year-old’s decision has been met with much support across the world, none more than that shown by fans in Argentina who want to see Messi continue with the national side.
And now over 100,000 people have signed up to attend a rally in support of Messi in hope of convincing him to stay a part of the Argentinian squad.
The event page says: “This Saturday June 2 at 6pm (10pm BST) we are all going to the Obelisco to show him our affection in hope that he will continue wearing the Argentina shirt.
“Come on Messi, don’t give up on us!!!”
The Obelisco is traditionally where supporters meet to celebrate trophies and triumphs for either clubs or the national team, but this weekend that venue will be used in a show of love towards Messi.
