Liberia head coach Peter Butler says the Super Eagles of Nigeria deserve to be in the final phase of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, following their 2-0 win against his side.
The Lone Star hosted the Eagles in Tangier, Morocco, in the fifth round fixture in Group C on Saturday.
But goals in each half, both from the penalty spot, by Victor Osimhen and Ahmed Musa, secured the win.
The victory means the Eagles stay top on 12 points and need just a point against Cape Verde to progress into the play-off.
For Liberia they can no longer qualify after suffering a fourth defeat in the qualifiers.
And speaking in his post-match press conference, Butler praised the Eagles for their quality, stating they are good enough to advance.
“First of all I would like to congratulate Nigeria, they deserve to go through to the next phase because they have good players, well drilled, well coached.“
Butler also praised his players for giving a good account of themselves despite playing against an established team.
“Over 90 minutes I thought we gave a good account of ourselves, we played some good football. We are in a rebuilding process and this team will improve in time.
“We don’t have the finance of teams like Nigeria, Senegal etc and also we don’t have the players to compete with them.
“I’m proud of the effort of my players, what I ask for they gave me, couple of mistakes but it is what it is, I’m not going to make excuses.“
