Over 50,000 people have signed an online petition calling for UEFA to strip Real Madrid of five of their European Cup successes.
The La Liga giants are due to contend in the Champions League final next weekend against rivals Atletico Madrid, looking to extend their current record of ten victories.
However, if the petition on Change.org is accepted, that number could go down to five with over 50,000 signatures calling for Real to be stripped of their wins, dated from 1955-1960.
These European Cups were the first five to be won by the club but, according to petition creator ‘Justicia Deportiva’ – which translates as Sporting Justice – believes that the competition results should not stand as the tournament then wasn’t in the same format as the current Champions League.
The petition reads: “We wish to request, in the name of the values represented by the sport and by democracy, that Real Madrid’s European Cup titles won between 1955-56 and 1959-60 are immediately revoked.
“[This would be] in recognition of the fact that those trophies in no way correspond to the competition recognised today as the UEFA Champions League.”
The organiser of this petition intends to present it to UEFA once it has been completed, with the user looking to get 75,000 signatures.
It’s not the first time that a petition has been created against Real Madrid. Earlier this campaign another was made on the same website calling for president Florentino Perez to resign from his position at the club. However this was to no avail.
