Rooney set to start against Zorya but will be back on the bench against Stoke

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will return to the starting line-up for Thursday’s Europa League game at home to Zorya Luhansk. However, he will be named on the bench for the Red Devils’ next Premier League clash against Stoke City on Sunday.

Rooney, who has received heavy criticism in some quarters for his performances this season, was named on the bench for United’s 4-1 victory over Leicester City last weekend and now faces a battle to regain his place in the side.

As reported by Sky Sports, Rooney will have an opportunity to showcase his credentials when what is expected to be a much-changed United side face Zorya, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic being rested.

Rooney has kept the ball rather well this season, registering an average pass accuracy of 86% in the Premier League, but he appears ill-suited to the central attacking midfield position in which he has consistently been deployed by manager Jose Mourinho. Indeed, he has been successful with just 21% of his attempted duels in the top flight this campaign.

Having previously suffered three consecutive defeats, United now have an opportunity to win their third game in succession when they take on Zorya.
