Pique: My goal was a pre-planned play for Suarez and my job had been to block

Barcelona came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia Park to finish the evening as the outright leader in their Champions League group, with Gerard Pique taking advantage of a goalkeeping error to score the winner at a corner.

The centre-back explained afterwards that he sensed that Yann Sommer didn’t have the ball fully under his control after Luis Suarez’s shot, so he gambled on him spilling it.

“It was a pre-planned play for Luis [Suarez] and my job had been to block,” he said in a post-match interview.

“I saw the goalkeeper was uncertain and it turned out well.”

Asked to describe the game as a whole, Pique felt that the Blaugrana were unlucky to go behind to one of Monchengladbach’s rare ventures forward.

“We knew it would be a difficult game as they are very dangerous on the counter attack and very quick,” he explained.

“I think in the first half they scored a goal with the only chance they had, while we wasted several opportunities.

“In the second half we were much better, with more chances, more of the ball and with fewer chances for them.”Because Barcelona had more of the ball and didn’t commit as many errors, there were fewer turnovers.”

Following the 7-0 win over Celtic on the opening matchday, Barcelona now have six points from six ahead of their crunch meeting with Manchester City on October 19.
