Owen Hargreaves has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United will miss out on the top four if Michael Carrick and Henrikh Mkhitaryan continue to be overlooked.
Carrick has featured only twice in the Premier League this term, while Mkhitaryan hasn’t played for United since the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on September 10.
Saturday’s goalless draw against Burnley has left United eighth in the table and eight points behind City, who lead the way on goal difference.
But Hargreaves believes United are in danger of missing out on making the Champions League once again if Mourinho sticks with his same system.
‘What are they, eighth in the Premier League? You’ve got to play him,’ Hargreaves told BT Sport.
‘What he’s tried now so far, he doesn’t believe in Mkhitaryan, but what he’s tried hasn’t worked.
‘So at some point, get one of the best players you have into your team.
‘The back four is very strong, best goalkeeper in the country. I think you play Carrick, Herrera to the right, Pogba off the left, Rashford off the left and Mkhitaryan off the right.
‘It’s a team, I genuinely believe, is as good a team [as any] in the Premier League.
‘But right now, as it is, I don’t think that team can finish top four.’
