In a typically bizarre Jose Mourinho press conference, the Manchester United manager claimed that his side’s 2-1 loss to Hull City was a draw.
United edged past the Tigers in a hard-fought EFL semi-final on Thursday evening, making the Wembley show-piece thanks to a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Hull performed brilliantly on the night to cut down the Red Devils’ commanding first-leg lead of 2-0, with Tom Huddlestone scoring a penalty in the first half.
Paul Pogba prodded the pivotal goal after the interval, before Oumar Niasse spearheaded the late pressure from Marco Silva’s team by scoring in the 86th minute.
While United saw their 17-game unbeaten streak ended, they held on to their aggregate lead to send Mourinho to his fourth League Cup final, and second trip to Wembley as manager of the North West giants.
The Portuguese coach, though, was not in an excitable mood on Humberside, primarily due to the controversial decision of referee Jon Moss to award the hosts a penalty.
Marcos Rojo was judged to have dragged down Harry Maguire at a set-piece, though the United players and boss were in disbelief over the somewhat soft award.
As reported by the Daily Mirror, Mourinho said: “We didn’t lose, it was 1-1. I only saw two goals.
“I saw a Pogba goal and their goal, a fantastic goal. A great cross and finish at the far post. It was 1-1, we are still unbeaten.
“I didn’t see [Hull’s first goal]. We celebrate, we are in the final. I don’t want to say anything else because it’s enough. I’m calm. I behaved on the bench, not sent off, no punishment so no more words.”
