Jose Mourinho has warned his Manchester United players that they must beat Bournemouth if they want to have any hope of finishing in the top four this season.
The Red Devils currently face an uphill struggle in the race for Champions League qualification, with Mourinho’s men currently sixth in the table.
Mourinho has been tasked with steering Manchester United back into the top four after the Red Devils ended up fifth last season under Louis van Gaal.
However, the Portuguese coach is well aware of the uphill task that awaits his side as they prepare for their EFL Cup final clash against Southampton on Sunday at Wembley.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website, Mourinho said: “We play against Bournemouth [after Wembley] and it doesn’t matter what happens in the final, we have to go to Old Trafford.
“If you want to finish in the top four or have a chance of that, we must beat Bournemouth.
“We must finish the final and then play Bournemouth. If you win, happiness always helps you for the next match.”
Manchester United are through to the Europa League last 16, where they will face Russian side Rostov. The Red Devils know that winning the Europa League this season may represent their best shot of securing Champions League qualification for next term.
