Campbell: ‘Wenger needs to buy winners, not invest in potential’

Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has urged Arsene Wenger to rip-up his transfer policy and buy established winners, rather than investing in potential.

Campbell was a member of the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ who went a whole season unbeaten on their way to the Premier League title in 2003-04, but the Gunners havent won a title since.

In the years following that title Wenger made wholsale chagnes to his side, opting to buy smaller, technically gifted players – a shift from the more physical profile of Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit.

And Campbell believes now is the time for the Frenchman to call on his experience and buy players with winning character, rather than just skill.

Campbell told The Times: “Obviously Arsene and Arsenal want to win, but winning comes at a cost.

“There are compromises you have to make through paying players and for personalities.

“Sometimes you might need to go back into your memory and remember the characters who won for you in the past and try to find those kind of guys.

“The types of characters who won for you in the past will be the same type of characters who will win for you in the future. Skillful guys who have ambition, but a little bit of something about them.

Campbell added: “That’s the winning mentality and it takes a long time for that to build and grow. Once you’ve lost that, it takes a hell of a long time to get it back.”
