Ancelotti: I sympathise with Wenger’s struggles at Arsenal

Carlo Ancelotti offered his support to Arsene Wenger following yet another disappointing result for Arsenal at the weekend, admitting he can “sympathise” with his struggles.

After making a bright start to the season, Arsenal have since endured a miserable run of form in the last two months, losing five of their last 11 Premier League fixtures, the latest of which came on Saturday evening. Wenger’s men were beaten 3-1 at Liverpool over the weekend, leaving their top four hopes in serious jeopardy.

Meanwhile the Gunners’ Champions League campaign is also on the brink, as they lost 5-1 at Bayern Munich last month in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Subsequently Wenger has come under huge pressure from fans and pundits alike, with his contract at the Emirates set to expire this summer.

However his Bayern counterpart has offered some support, claiming he has a lot of respect for the job he’s done in north London.

“I think that we have to live our jobs with critics sometimes,” Ancelotti said (via Goal). “Wenger is a manger with a lot of experience and more experience than others and I’m sure he will be able to react, to manage the situation. This month is something that can happen to every manager, criticism is normal.

“I sympathise with him as a manager and a man. I have a good relationship with him and of course a lot of respect because not all the managers would be able to do what he did here in this club.”

Arsenal have scored 55 goals and conceded 31 in their 26 Premier League fixtures this season, with a shot accuracy of 48%, as they sit fifth on 50 points, two behind the top four.

Next up for them is a home clash with Bayern in the Champions League on Tuesday night, before taking on Lincoln City in the FA Cup quarter-finals at the Emirates.
