Jose Mourinho has played down Manchester United’s chances of signing Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva this summer.
The Portugal international has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford, with reports in France claiming earlier this week that United have already made an offer which Monaco will find difficult to refuse.
But while Mourinho admits he’d ‘welcome’ a move for the 22-year-old, the United manager is not holding out much hope that a reported £70 million deal will be completed.
‘I think not. Honestly, I think not,’ he told Sport TV after United’s Europa League final victory on Wednesday night.
‘But you never know. Good players are always welcome.’
Mourinho also claimed that United’s summer transfer targets will not change now that the club have qualified for next season’s Champions League.
‘The club knows perfectly well what I want,’ he said.
‘They knew two months ago. It had nothing to do with qualifying for the Champions League.
‘A giant club, but it’s not a giant team. We need that second step, possibly the third one.’
