Portugal-based Stanley Kanu makes case for Flying Eagles call-up

CD Portosantense forward Stanley Kanu believes he deserves a call-up to Nigeria’s U20 team following a succesful first season in Europe.

The former Diamond Football Academy striker has hit the ground running since his move to the Portuguese third division side in the January transfer window, scoring eight goals in the league and one goal in a cup match.

The Flying Eagles began their final qualifying round for the African Youth Championship against Guinea Bissau on Saturday, letting slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 in the first-leg of the tie in Bissau.

Nigeria Under-20 coach Paul Aigbogun in the coming weeks is expected to call up some foreign based players to his squad as Nigeria bid to stage a return to the African youth scene after their failure to qualify for the last tournament.

Prominent among the foreign-based players expected to join the team is Villarreal midfielder Samuel Chukwueze who won the Bronze Boot at the U17 World Cup in Chile and was part of the last U20 team.

The pacy Abia State-born Stanley Kanu, who can also play from the wings, is hoping to join his former teammate at the famous Diamond Academy of Umuahia Chukwueze in the Flying Eagles squad.

“I’ll be delighted if I get a call-up to the Flying Eagles. It’ll be a great honour to represent Nigeria,” ‘Jamba’ as the striker is fondly called began.

“Chukwueze is a great player who has done Nigeria proud. We played together in Diamond Academy and I’ll be pleased to be in the same team with him again.

“I’ve be working very hard since I moved to Portugal and I thank God for the goals I have scored so far. I hope to do even better next season.”
