Atletico Madrid and Ghana star Thomas Partey has paid tribute to Nigerian legends John Obi Mikel and Nwankwo Kanu following his visit to the country this week.
Partey was part of the Atletico side which defeated Nigeria ‘B’ in a friendly match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday evening.
The Ghanaian had high praise for Nigeria’s senior team captain John Obi Mikel, and also revealed that Super Eagles legend Kanu was his idol growing up.
“I’m a huge admirer of Mikel Obi. I like the way he keeps things very simple on the pitch and makes it seem so simple and easy to do, but Nwankwo Kanu is my idol. He’s the best midfielder I’ve ever seen play football. He was a genius” Partey told Complete Sports Nigeria.
The hard-running midfielder also lamented the Black Stars’ inability to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but wished the best of luck to Africa’s five representatives at the tournament.
“It was unfortunate that Ghana will not be at the World Cup. We tried our best but we were not good enough. That’s behind us now. We will look forward to the future. I congratulate the teams going to the World Cup,” said Partey.
“They are good enough to qualify [for the knockout stages] so we all should support them because they will be flying the flag of Africa.”
