Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has pulled no punches with his comments regarding the futures of Dries Mertens and Jose Callejon. The Azzurri duo have both been linked with a move to the Chinese Super League as they will fall out of contract at Napoli at the end of the current campaign.
Mertens and Callejon could look for one big final pay day given they are both 32 and approaching the end of their careers.
With huge wages on offer in China, many players have decided to make the switch from top European divisions to the Super League, but De Laurentiis has issued a stern warning to two of his star players. “I’m absolutely not prepared to make a major effort for them,” De Laurentiis told Sky Sport Italia. “Each player has a value, depending on where they play, how they play, how old they are and what they do. “If they want to sell themselves out in China, overpaid to live a life of sh*t for two or three years, it’s their problem. I can’t consider China to be competitive. China’s far away. If they consider it to be close, it’s their problem. “In life, you have to choose whether to be happy and find a job you enjoy doing, or work just for money.”
Napoli, who already find themselves six points behind Serie A frontrunners Juventus after seven games of the league campaign, are currently fourth and face Verona at home on Saturday.
