Defender David Luiz insists it is far too early in the season to rule Arsenal out of the title race just yet. The Gunners sit third in the Premier League table with 15 points from eight games so far but they are already nine points off the pace, as league leaders Liverpool have a perfect record with eight wins in as many games.
Manchester City are a point above Arsenal and most feel the title race will be a two-horse race between the Reds and the defending champions yet again, but summer arrival Luiz says his side remain in the mix. “For me, if you start something, and we’ve just started the Premier League and all of the competitions, if you don’t think you can win the competition then you won’t start anything in your life,” Luiz told NBC Sports.
He added: “My vision, my ambition and my will is always to fight for the title and between the club, the players and the coach [Unai Emery], we have the possibility to fight for the title.”
Arsenal managed just two wins in their opening five Premier League matches of the season but have hit some form since and have five wins in their last six games across all competitions.
The Gunners could fall further behind over the weekend as they head to Sheffield United on Monday, with Liverpool up against Manchester United on Sunday and City at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
If Arsenal do force their way into the title battle then results against the two sides immediately above them will be crucial. Emery’s men have already been beaten by Liverpool this season and their next game against one of the top two is on December 15 when they entertain City.
