Tottenham 1-1 Watford

Dele Alli rescued a point for Spurs as they held Watford to a 1-1 draw in north London. Watford opened the scoring after just six minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a delightful team effort.
Daryl Janmaat was picked out by a fine ball from deep, his touch took him out wide and gave him space before he managed to bend the ball behind the defence.
Abdoulaye Doucoure timed his run perfectly to meet Janmaat’s delivery and slotted the ball beyond Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who was given the nod in the absence of injured skipper Hugo Lloris.
Spurs held the ball well but are clearly a team lacking confidence and were unable to create any meaningful opportunities in the first half.
Moussa Sissoko did fire over when well placed soon after Doucoure’s opener but that was as good as it got for Tottenham in the first half.
It could have got worse for Spurs before the break when Watford were awarded a penalty before the decision was overruled by VAR.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino opted for a change at half-time and introduced Son Heung-min for Davinson Sanchez.
The decision nearly paid off immediately as the South Korean created space for himself and let fly although his effort hit the woodwork.
Spurs continued to struggle to create openings but finally managed to draw level with just four minutes remaining. Alli scored his first goal since January after seizing on a loose ball and slotted home.
There was some confusion, as after the VAR check the big screen said no goal, but ultimately Alli’s effort stood – despite the ball hitting his arm in the build-up – as Watford were denied their first win of the season.
