Whyte facing 16-month wait for title shot

The WBC says Dillion Whyte will become mandatory challenger for the heavyweight title in 2021 if his “situation is resolved” with UKAD. The Brit earned mandatory challenger status after beating Oscar Rivas for the vacant WBC interim heavyweight strap in July. Whyte’s camp was preparing to enter into negotiations with Deontay Wilder’s representatives over a WBC world title shot, however, his status was suspended due to an “adverse finding” in a UK Anti-Doping test. He has been fighting that suspension in the meantime but investigations are still taking place on the part of UKAD. The WBC has now offered Whyte hope of reclaiming his mandatory status but says it won’t be restored until February 2021. “No. 1 ranked Dillian Whyte’s situation is in process with UKAD and Whyte’s representatives, and with the WBC,” A statement from the WBC read. “If his situation is resolved, he will become the mandatory challenger for February, 2021.”
