Fab four stand out in the Champions League

We have reached the halfway point in the group stage of the Champions League and four teams in particular are standing out from the crowd. Three games have been played but there is still plenty of football left in Europe’s elite competition and it is difficult to predict who will go on and be crowned champions this season.
Saying that, four team are impressing already and look sure to be there or thereabouts come the business end.
Here are the best contenders so far.
Manchester City
A bit of an obvious one, but City are looking very strong already. Admittedly, they have done so in years gone by – only to crash out in the latter stages – and it remains to be seen if that will be the case again this season.
However, on the evidence so far, they are on fire. They have scored a total of 10 goals in their three games and have conceded just one. The 5-1 victory over Atalanta in midweek was particularly impressive.
Winning the Champions League this season is clearly the number one goal and they look fired up for it.
Paris Saint-Germain
Another team who have dominated domestically but are yet to win the Champions League – despite a big outlay of cash over the last few years.
They have won all three games so far, crushing Real Madrid 3-0 in the process. The 5-0 victory away at Club Brugge on Tuesday night was also impressive, with Kylian Mbappe helping himself to a hat-trick.
Thomas Tuchel has assembled a strong side and with Neymar back on board and pledging to win the Champions League before probably leaving at the end of the season, it could be PSG’s year on the evidence so far.
Bayern Munich
The only other team to have a 100 per cent record so far. They have been unconvincing in the Bundesliga but are shining in Europe.
Bayern hammered Tottenham 7-2 on their own patch and showed they can also grind out a win when beating Olympiakos 3-2 in Athens in midweek.
Like PSG and City, Bayern have faltered in the latter stages over the last few years but have ticked all boxes so far. Injuries could hurt them, though, having lost key defenders Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Sule to serious injury over the last week.
Chelsea
Honourable mention for Frank Lampard’s young guns, who got the group stage off to a bad start with a defeat at home to Valencia.
They have since bounced back with win an away at Lille and at last season’s semi-finalists, Ajax.
It would be a huge upset if they went all the way and won the Champions League although if they carry on in this manner then the quarter-finals or beyond could be a possibility.
