Newcastle United 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Jonny’s second half equaliser salvaged Wolves a deserved share of the spoils as they drew 1-1 against ten-man Newcastle at St James’ Park. Steve Bruce made just one change to the Magpies’ side who lost 1-0 at Chelsea last weekend, with Federico Fernandez handed his first Premier League start of the season in place of the injured Fabian Schar.
Wolves boasted three changes to the team that drew with Southampton last weekend as injured duo Ryan Bennett and Willy Boly, along with Patrick Cutrone, replaced by Roman Saiss, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota.
Following a lacklustre opening half-hour, it was Newcastle who went close to opening the scoring on 34 minutes. Matty Longstaff’s ball over the top picked out the run of Miguel Almiron, but after a poor first touch, he couldn’t convert at the back post from a tight angle.
Newcastle did get their noses in front three minutes later when Saiss could only clear a Sean Longstaff cross to Fernandez, whose superb delivery back into the middle picked out captain Jamaal Lascelles who powered his header past Rui Patricio.
Wolves stepped up a gear after the break and should have equalised on 57 minutes when Adam Traore put in a tempting cross from the left and Jota got ahead of his man at the front post, only to direct his header over the top.
The visitors continued to pin Newcastle back inside their own half of the field and Jota went close again on 67 minutes when he skipped past Fernandez and Matty Longstaff before forcing Martin Dubravka into a parrying save.
It was no real surprise when Wolves did get on level terms in the 73rd minute as Matt Doherty’s cross into the area from the right was palmed down by a stretching Dubravka and Jonny was on the spot to fire into the net.
Despite their second-half struggles, Newcastle almost went back in front on 76 minutes when Jetro Willems lashed a 25-yard strike inches wide of Patricio’s far corner.
Wolves were given a lift eight minutes from time when Sean Longstaff was red-carded for a bad high tackle on Ruben Neves.
But, despite facing ten men for the final minutes, Wolves couldn’t find a winner, although Doherty went close in stoppage time when he guided a header inches wide after good work from Raul Jimenez.
Wolves, now unbeaten in eight, move up to 11th on 12 points, while Newcastle remain in 17th on nine points.
