Pioli takes aim at Milan stars after Roma loss

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli blasted his newly-inherited side as they slipped to defeat against AS Roma on Sunday. Pioli was in charge of just his second game since replacing the sacked Marco Giampaolo and he was far from impressed with what he saw as they went down 2-1 in the Stadio Olimpico.
The Rossoneri appeared to have rescued a point as a goal from Theo Hernandez cancelled out Edin Dzeko’s opener, but the home side snatched all three points courtesy of Nicolo Zaniolo’s strike.
The manner of Roma’s winning goal infuriated Pioli, who could already be feeling the pressure that the Milan job brings with it. “I expected more – we have put in a lot of hours and we have failed to win against Lecce and now lost against Roma,” Pioli said after the defeat. “We have made incredible mistakes. In the first half the game was well balanced, but you can’t concede a goal like we did to Zaniolo.”
A place in the top four and the Champions League is what Milan, who drew 2-2 with Lecce last week, must achieve this season, but Pioli is concerned that time is already running out. “We need to reverse this trend because the numbers are against us now,” he added. “We made too many obvious errors. Roma did not put any pressure on us, but they only needed one mistake. “We have taken a step backwards from a week ago. I don’t think it’s a lack of will or determination, but we have made technical errors and you pay for those mistakes.”
