Raheem Sterling’s management currently has no plans to sit down and discuss an extension to his £300,000-per-week deal at Manchester City. The red-hot England winger is set to be rested for tonight’s Carabao Cup clash at home to Southampton, with a place on the substitutes’ bench likely.
Sterling has been a virtual ever-present for Pep Guardiola this season and the City boss could instead give winger Riyad Mahrez a start against the wounded Saints, who will be looking to make amends following their humiliating 9-0 home loss to Leicester City last Friday evening.
Recent reports coming out of the Etihad are that the club’s top brass are open to discussing extending Sterling deal beyond 2023 – just 12 months after the former Liverpool star penned his last one.
Sterling has bagged 17 goals in 18 appearances this season for both club and country, making him the stand out figure in European football at present.
Real Madrid are long-term admirers of the rapid 24-year-old and said to be plotting a £200million bid next summer, with the Citizens well aware how the Spanish giants conducts its transfer business via the Madrid-based press.
Sterling is previously on record as stating he might like to try his football abroad at some stage in his career, although there is no suggestion he is unhappy playing for the Premier League champions.
And sources close to his camp have insisted they certainly are not using the Madrid interest to try and leverage yet more money out of the Manchester giants.
City have not discussed the matter with Sterling’s handlers, who have laughed off suggestions they are already demanding £450,000-per-week for their client.
The fact is, the £50million forward has three years left on his existing agreement and City may wait until after next summer’s European Championship, before deciding about putting their star performer further out of bounds.
