Jose Mourinho would be ready take a pay cut of around £4 million per year in
order to join Manchester United, as per the Daily Star.
According to the newspaper, Mourinho was the highest paid manager in the
Premier League at Chelsea, earning around £10m-a-year, but he would happily
accept a four-year deal at Old Trafford worth £6m-a-season.
An unnamed source reportedly said: ”Jose is making no secret of how keen he
is to take charge of United if the job becomes available.
”It is not about the money. Managing United has always been one of his
ambitions because of the prestige and history associated with the club.”
”He knows it would be a huge challenge, but he loves working in English
football and would take a wage cut if it meant getting the chance to make
United great again.”
If Mourinho were to land the Manchester United job, he would be taking over
from a man that taught him a lot about the game, and coaching in particular.
The pair worked together when Van Gaal was Barcelona manager from 1997-2000,
and during that period the Catalans won La Liga twice, the Copa del Rey once
and the UEFA Super Cup once.
Van Gaal allowed Mourinho to develop his own coaching style and work with the
Barcelona B team.
Mourinho, though, is a natural competitor, and if United were to sack their
Dutch boss, the job would be one that would be hard to turn down for him.
The former Chelsea boss has managed some of the world’s biggest clubs
already, but he is still only one year older (52) than Ferguson when he won
his first league title at Old Trafford in 1993.
According to Spanish journalist Diego Torres, who wrote a book about
Mourinho, the Portuguese boss broke down in tears when David Moyes got the
United job.
