Watford keeper coach – ‘results will come’

Watford goalkeeper coach Emilio Lopez says “the results will come” and has revealed his approach to working with Hornets number one Ben Foster. Lopez took up the position when Quique Sanchez Flores returned to the head coach role at Watford in September.
But it is Lopez’s first time at Vicarage Road although he did work with Flores in China and at Spanish outfit Getafe.
He boasts plenty of experience, having mentored over 200 goalkeepers since he first took up coaching in 2003. “The Premier is spectacular in every way”, he told Diario Atlantico.
Lopez believes Watford “deserved something more” against both Arsenal and Tottenham, when both matches ended in draws, adding “the work is good and the results will come”.
The low point so far was Watford’s 8-0 humbling against Manchester City but Lopez feels there was no lasting psychological damage done to Foster. “They are accidents. A bad game does not come back, there is no need to turn it over. Just learn from mistakes so that they do not happen again,” he said.
Two games later and Foster had his first clean sheet in over a year, with Lopez revealing that both coach and protégé celebrated and moved on from the City game.
The mental aspect of the game is key to the work of a goalkeeper coach and Lopez says computer software is increasingly important nowadays.
He is also an advocate of the Celta Vigo style of keeping, which he developed while backing up ex-Spanish number one Santiago Canizares at his home-town club in the early 1990s. “What I want is for the goalkeeper to think, to make the best decision,” he said. “Every year there is a new rule. You have to be in continuous training to keep up with modern football. We have no choice but to study every day.”
