Gomes in hospital after horror injury against Spurs

Everton’s serious injury curse struck again on Sunday as Andre Gomes was stretchered off after suffering a painful leg injury against Tottenham Hotspur. Gomes was tackled by Spurs forward Son close to the technical areas and appeared to be injured by an awkward fall which prompted an anguished reaction from players and fans close to the incident.
Perhaps harshly, Son was sent off by referee Martin Atkinson as Gomes received extensive treatment during a lengthy delay to the game and was eventually taken off on a stretcher.
The Portugal international was taken to hospital, accompanied by Everton medical staff, and it may take some time before his injury situation is fully understood.
Former Everton winger Pat Nevin, who was at Goodison Park in his role as a BBC Radio 5 Live analyst, described the incident as “horrible”. “Players looked devastated and there was utter confusion – players with their heads in their hands,” he said. “Son was distraught before he was sent off, and Serge Aurier couldn’t watch and was praying. “Gomes was led straight to the corner to the ambulance to take him to hospital.”
The sombre atmosphere around the ground was eventually lifted by substitute Cenk Tosun’s 98th-minute equaliser as the Turkish striker headed in from close range.
But, following 12 minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle went and attention turned back to Gomes’ injury plight.
If the ex-Barcelona midfielder has suffered a broken leg or ankle then his season would appear to be over at the very least.
But if Gomes has suffered a complex fracture then he may be sidelined for up to a year, which could mean Everton start next season without the services of their £22million man.
Under-fire boss Marco Silva can be forgiven for thinking that Everton are under an injury curse after seeing Jean-Phillipe Gbamin suffer a setback to his early-season thigh injury and Brazilian winger Bernard ruled out for the campaign following a freak accident on the pitch at Brighton last weekend.
