Sheffield United ace John Lundstram says the club are still focused on Premier League survival despite their sensational start. The Blades climbed up to sixth at the weekend as they beat Burnley 3-0 at Bramall Lane, with Lundstram grabbing two goals.
United are now unbeaten in four matches after beating Arsenal and drawing with Watford and West Ham. Wilder’s side started the campaign with a draw at Bournemouth and then a win over Crystal Palace, but they then endured a rough patch after beating the Eagles.
Two defeats saw them drop towards the wrong end of the table, but the South Yorkshire outfit are living the dream at present. United have enjoyed their best start for 44 years, and Wilder’s side and Leicester City currently have the best defensive record. His 3-5-2 formation has worked wonders, with United only conceding eight goals in 11 games.
Lundstram has managed to silence his own critics this season but he claims his team are not getting carried away.
He told reporters: “I think if we’re all honest, at the start of the season we wanted to stay up. It’s still the same. We’ve had a good start, but it’s still very early, and we can’t go getting carried away or anything like that. “This league can punish you massively, so we’re not getting carried away. The aim is still to stay up. The belief we’ve got is the most important thing.”
Lundstram has now scored three goals this season, and he is playing the best football of his career after mainly been stuck in the Football League. He is set to start Saturday’s trip to Tottenham before Wilder’s men face Manchester United and Wolves.
Their fixture list around Christmas could also have been kinder, even though they will welcome Watford to Bramall Lane on Boxing Day. Trips to Manchester City and Liverpool follow, but Wilder’s side look in a good position to avoid the drop as it stands.
