Canelo the target for Saunders

Billy Joe Saunders wants to face Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez after his clash with Martin Esteban Coceres this weekend. The WBO super-middleweight champion defends his title against Coceres at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday. It should be a fairly straightforward defence for the 30-year-old and he is already thinking ahead to his next targets. Canelo became a four-weight world champion last week with his stoppage win over Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO light-heavyweight belt. Saunders says if he cannot convince Canelo to take him on at super-middleweight, he will make the step up in a bid to force a showdown with the Mexican. “I want Canelo Alvarez,” BJS told Sky Sports. “Canelo’s never been a 168lbs [super-middleweight] world champion. “They say he has, he hasn’t. WBA ‘regular’ champion? That’s not the full world title, he’s never been full world champion. “So let’s go. I’ll give him a chance, let’s go. You give me a chance and I’ll give you a chance of being a four-weight world champion.” He added: “I’m 100 per cent sure that I’d beat him. “I might move up to 175lbs [light-heavyweight] and then I become mandatory to him. He either fights me or vacates.”
