Middlesex sign Aussie star Handscomb

Middlesex have announced the signing of Australian Peter Handscomb on a two-year deal that will also see him captain the side. Middle-order batsman Handscomb will lead the Lord’s-based team throughout the 2020 and 2021 seasons and he is expected to be available for all formats of the game. The 28-year-old brings with him a wealth of experience having featured for Australia 40 times across Test, One Day and Twenty20 internationals, including at this year’s World Cup in England. Handscomb has also enjoyed three previous stints in the County Championship with Gloucestershire in 2015, Yorkshire in 2017 and most recently Durham last season. Middlesex’s head coach Stuart Law is certainly delighted by the arrival of Handscomb, who replaces Dawid Malan as captain following the confirmation earlier this month that the England batsman will be ending his 13-year association with the county to join Yorkshire for the 2020 season. “We are delighted and excited to have an all-round cricketer of Peter’s stature at the club,” Law told the Middlesex website. “Peter is a fine player and he will fill a couple of the gaps that have been created. He is a successful captain, a fine middle-order player and the sort of character who will help create a strong positive environment that will keep moving the club forward.”
